Fertilizer Stocks Tumble As Trump Says "Working On Massive" Belarus Potash Deal
President Donald Trump said the United States is working on a “massive” Belarus potash purchase at prices below those paid to Canada, sending fertilizer shares to session lows. The proposal introduces a potential supply and pricing challenge for North American producers, but its commercial terms and timing remain undefined.
Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly before 11 a.m. ET that the United States was working on a “massive Deal” to purchase potash from Belarus. He said the pricing would be substantially below what the United States is currently paying Canada, describing the proposal as favorable for farmers and ranchers.
Intrepid Potash fell 4.6%, CF Industries declined 3.5% and Mosaic dropped 4.5% to session lows after the statement. The move came after Trump imposed 50% tariffs, according to the report, adding a trade-policy backdrop to the market reaction.
The direct mechanism is potash supply and price. Belarus would be the prospective supplier, while U.S. agricultural producers could receive lower-cost fertilizer if a deal is completed; Intrepid Potash and Mosaic are exposed to fertilizer pricing, while CF Industries is also tied to the broader nitrogen-fertilizer market.
The statement describes work on a deal rather than a completed agreement. No purchase volume, contract terms, timetable or implementation details were established in the report, leaving the effect on individual producers dependent on whether the proposal becomes a binding supply arrangement.
The next concrete markers are any announcement of a signed agreement, details on Belarusian volumes and pricing, and subsequent company commentary on realized fertilizer prices and demand.
Trump said the US is working on a massive Belarus potash purchase priced below current Canadian supplies.
A completed low-cost Belarus supply agreement would pressure potash pricing and could challenge Intrepid Potash’s fertilizer economics; its FY2025 revenue was $298.3M with a 3.8% net margin, leaving limited room for a price shock. The immediate share-price reaction already reflects the first read, while the absence of volumes, pricing terms and a timetable prevents a dated directional call; CF’s broader nitrogen exposure and FY2025 revenue of $7.1B provide some differentiation from a pure potash outcome.
The trade read fails if the proposal does not become a binding agreement or if volumes and pricing are too small to affect North American fertilizer prices.

The proposal may not translate into material supply, and Intrepid Potash’s FY2025 revenue grew 17.1% year over year despite its smaller scale.
A signed deal offering Belarusian potash below current Canadian pricing would create a direct benchmark against North American fertilizer producers, after IPI, CF and MOS already fell 4.6%, 3.5% and 4.5%.
