Alaska Air sees larger fourth-quarter loss as fuel costs surge
Alaska Air forecasts a larger-than-expected fourth-quarter loss as fuel costs surge. The result puts operating-cost pressure against the company’s recent revenue growth ahead of its next earnings update.
STOCK PHOTO · DYLAN CHANThe story
Alaska Air issued a fourth-quarter loss forecast that is larger than analysts expected, citing soaring fuel costs. The forecast was reported on Oct. 20, before the company’s fourth-quarter results are due.
The warning follows fiscal 2025 revenue of $14.2 billion, up 21.3% year over year, but net margin was 0.7% and diluted EPS was $0.83 for that full year. The current forecast concerns the fourth quarter and should not be treated as a revision to those older annual figures.
The direct mechanism is fuel expense: higher jet-fuel costs raise Alaska Air’s operating costs and can reduce the earnings contribution from passenger revenue. The company’s revenue base provides a larger sales line against which those costs are measured, but the loss forecast indicates that the cost increase is expected to outweigh that support in the quarter.
The size of the expected loss and the fuel-cost assumptions remain the central uncertainties until Alaska Air reports the quarter. The next update should clarify the realized fuel burden and whether the pressure extended beyond the fourth quarter.
Our read · Tue, Oct 20
Higher fuel costs leave Alaska Air forecasting a larger-than-expected fourth-quarter loss.
Why. The earnings pressure is concentrated in fuel expense, which can overwhelm Alaska Air’s recent revenue growth when the company is already coming from a 0.7% full-year net margin. The $14.2B FY2025 revenue base is a concrete offset, but the larger-than-expected loss forecast leaves the next quarterly report as the test of whether the cost shock is temporary or more persistent.
Both cases
What could change this view: A reversal in fuel costs or stronger operating revenue could narrow the projected loss before the quarterly report.
