Labcorp to Offer First FDA-Cleared Blood Test to Detect Alzheimer's Disease Pathology in Both Primary and Specialty Care Settings
Labcorp will offer the first FDA-cleared single-biomarker blood test that can both rule in and rule out amyloid pathology associated with Alzheimer’s disease in primary and specialty care. The test expands Labcorp’s diagnostic reach into a large unmet-care pathway, but the commercial contribution and rollout economics are not yet disclosed.
The Elecsys pTau-217 test measures phosphorylated Tau 217, a biomarker associated with amyloid pathology and Alzheimer's disease. Labcorp said the test is FDA-cleared for use across specialty and primary care settings, distinguishing it from tests limited to narrower clinical environments.
The product connects Labcorp with Roche's Elecsys diagnostic platform and with clinicians evaluating patients for possible Alzheimer's disease. Its ability to rule in and rule out amyloid pathology could allow blood testing to serve as an earlier screening step before more specialized workups.
The FDA-cleared Alzheimer’s blood test adds a differentiated growth option for LH, though the near-term earnings read remains unquantified.
The product gives LH a regulatory-backed offering that can broaden testing beyond specialty-care channels, adding a potential growth vector to a business that reported $14.0B of revenue and 7.2% YoY growth in FY 2025. The trade is constructive but measured because the announcement supplies no pricing, volume, reimbursement, or revenue forecast to support a larger immediate repricing.
The setup fails if primary-care adoption, reimbursement, or test volume develops slowly and the product produces little incremental revenue relative to LH’s $14.0B base.

Price context does not establish that the story caused the move.
FDA clearance across primary and specialty care, combined with LH’s existing diagnostic distribution, provides a concrete path for the test to become a scalable Alzheimer’s screening product.
Limited near-term bear case from the announcement itself, but the financial impact remains unproven because no pricing, reimbursement, volume, or revenue contribution was disclosed.
