Nvidia reportedly weighs Reflection AI deal to challenge DeepSeek

Nvidia is reportedly in talks to acquire Reflection AI, a US start-up developing open artificial-intelligence models. The potential deal would connect Nvidia’s chip business to Washington’s effort to build a US alternative to low-cost Chinese systems such as DeepSeek.

The story

The Financial Times reported on October 10 that Nvidia is in talks to acquire Reflection AI, a US start-up focused on “open” artificial-intelligence models. The report places the discussions alongside an effort by Donald Trump’s administration to have the company challenge cheaper Chinese alternatives, including DeepSeek.

Reflection AI’s proposed role is strategic as well as commercial: its models would be intended to strengthen the US position in an increasingly competitive AI market. The reported discussions do not establish that an acquisition will be completed, and no transaction value or timetable is specified.

For Nvidia, the link is direct but not yet quantified. The company supplies the computing infrastructure used across AI development, while acquiring a model developer would add a software and research asset to that hardware position. Reflection AI would become part of Nvidia’s effort to participate further up the AI stack if the talks produce a deal.

The main uncertainty is the status of the negotiations and whether they result in an agreement. The strategic rationale also depends on whether an open-model start-up can compete with cheaper Chinese systems such as DeepSeek and translate that position into commercial demand.

The next markers are a definitive transaction announcement, any disclosed purchase terms and Reflection AI’s model or product milestones. Nvidia’s next results will also show whether its existing AI infrastructure business continues to support the company’s current scale, including fiscal 2026 revenue of $215.9B and 55.6% net margins.

Our take

1 / 7
Our read · Oct 10

Nvidia (NVDA) is reportedly in talks to buy Reflection AI, a US developer of open artificial-intelligence models.

Why

The strategic upside is an entry into AI software and model development, but the talks carry no disclosed price, timetable or closing certainty, leaving the immediate earnings mechanism undefined. Nvidia’s $215.9B fiscal 2026 revenue and 55.6% net margin show a substantial existing base against which any Reflection AI contribution would initially be measured.

What could change this view

The talks may not produce a transaction, and Reflection AI may not gain enough traction against cheaper systems such as DeepSeek to create a material business contribution.

▲ The case it holds

A completed acquisition could extend Nvidia from AI infrastructure into open models while its fiscal 2026 revenue reached $215.9B and net margin was 55.6%.

▼ The case it breaks

The bear case is that an uncompleted, unpriced acquisition discussion adds no measurable earnings contribution against Nvidia’s existing $215.9B revenue base.
