Anthropic reports $16.96 billion revenue as expenses reach $17.5 billion

Anthropic’s amended S-1 puts third-quarter revenue at $16.96 billion and operating expenses at $17.5 billion. The filing also highlights a $900 billion committed-spend figure, sharpening scrutiny of the capital intensity behind frontier-AI growth.

The story

Anthropic’s Amendment No. 1 to its S-1 adds third-quarter figures for the three months ended September 30, 2026. Revenue was $16.96 billion, compared with $1.38 billion a year earlier, while total operating expenses reached $17.5 billion; the prospectus summary now shows $17.0 billion for the quarter on a rounded basis.

The update follows Anthropic’s initial S-1 filing and changes the picture from a period in which operating profit had been reported for one quarter. The amended filing also puts committed spend at $900 billion, a figure described as second only to Google’s.

For Anthropic, the mechanism is direct: rapid revenue growth is accompanied by operating expenses that exceeded quarterly revenue. Google is the named comparison, and its FY 2025 revenue was $402.8 billion with a 32.8% net margin, though that annual company figure is not directly comparable with Anthropic’s quarterly filing data.

The figures leave the durability of Anthropic’s operating profitability unresolved. The revenue comparison is large, but the expense total shows how much spending is required alongside that growth; the committed-spend figure also raises questions about the timing and economics of future infrastructure obligations.

The next reference point is Anthropic’s subsequent quarterly reporting, particularly whether revenue continues to scale faster than operating expenses and how the company describes its committed obligations in future filings.

Our read · Mon, Nov 2

Anthropic reported $16.96 billion in third-quarter revenue against $17.5 billion of operating expenses in its amended S-1.

Why. The filing makes AI infrastructure economics more consequential for Google, but the comparison is not one-sided: Google’s FY 2025 revenue was $402.8 billion and its net margin was 32.8%, while Anthropic’s latest quarter shows operating expenses exceeding revenue. The $900 billion committed-spend figure broadens the question from current results to the scale and timing of future obligations, without establishing a direct change to Google’s reported financials.

Both cases

The case it holdsGoogle’s $402.8 billion FY 2025 revenue and 32.8% net margin provide a much larger financial base than Anthropic’s quarterly cost burden.
The case it breaksAnthropic’s $900 billion committed-spend figure highlights the scale of AI infrastructure commitments that could pressure economics across major cloud and AI providers.

What could change this view: The read is weakened if Anthropic’s expense surge reflects temporary investment or if subsequent filings show operating expenses scaling well below revenue growth.
